New Community Activity?
Do you have an idea for a community activity that needs access to a room or hall but can’t get off the ground because of uncertainty over income to cover room hire?
Cottenham Community Centre would like to hear from you. We have space available a lot of the time and although we charge for using these facilities, we are keen to encourage community activities and would be flexible towards organisations looking to try out new community projects.
If you would like to know more, including our improvement plans for 2018 please contact Mike Smith on smithmichaelstanley@hotmail.com or 01954 251915
    1. Room Hire

There are three rooms (main hall, studio, coffee shop) for hire at the Cottenham Community Centre for new activities or parties. Full food catering and/or a bar can be provided. The hall is also great for businesses to use for training or meetings. Full entertainment licence etc held. See the website www.cottenhamcc.org or email smithmichaelstanley@hotmail.com

All Saints’ Cottenham: welcome to Revd Lynda Davies!

The evening of October 16 th saw the licensing service for Revd Lynda Davies, the new rector of All Saints’ Cottenham and All Saints’ Rampton.    It was a lovely and memorable occasion with a full church and some rousing hymns.  The organist said delightedly, “That was the best congregational singing I’ve ever played for: I got to pull out all the stops.”   The Rt Rev David Thomson, Bishop of Huntingdon, led the service with his characteristic blend of  grace and gentle good humour, and Iain Campbell from her former parish commended her to us warmly.   Members of the Cottenham and Rampton community welcomed Lynda, asked her to make sure the church tower doesn’t fall down like it did 400 years ago, and invited her to do crafts with the Brownies.  The service was followed by a fantastic spread of refreshments from the All Saints’ Cottenham team (pictured below).   We are all very much looking forward to Lynda’s ministry with us. Lynda is joined in Cottenham by her h

Bird report

I have often said in this column that the world of birds is full of surprises, and the past few days have been no exception. You may well have already heard of the wandering young swan in Cottenham. This bird eventually turned up on the roof of the Village College, and presumably provided a welcome distraction for students and staff alike. This bird was finally rescued by an official of the RSPCA and no doubt returned to a more suitable place. Another surprise was experienced by a family in the village when they heard a loud bang on a window and found that a green woodpecker had flown straight into the window and had suffered mild concussion. The bird was given some TLC and recovered. The third surprise was when a lady in Lambs Lane rang me up to tell me that she had had a pied wagtail in her garden with a yellow head. This was a new one for me, but after some research we discovered that young pied wagtails sometimes have a yellowish head in the autumn before taking on full plum

Homegrown Cottenham Rock N Roll!

If you’re looking for something a bit different as a stocking filler this Christmas, why not try the new album ‘fragments’ by Clive-Upon-Sea, the artistic alter ego of Rev Simon Oliver, Cottenham’s Methodist minister. The album is one of the products of the Arts Night which has been meeting in the Cottenham Community Centre Coffee Shop over the last few years (and was actually co-founded by the current editor of this esteemed publication!). The group meets twice a month on Sunday nights to explore life, art, philosophy and faith through the creative arts. We are mostly a bunch of singers, musicians and songwriters, but we’ve also had poets, photographers, artists and story writers amongst our number has hosted an Arts Night. Do get in touch if you’d like to come along. It’s a really great, low key event. The sorts of issues we have explored over the past few years have ranged from Sex, God, Death and the Devil to Summer, Childhood, Christmas and Hangovers! The album features 12 of
